Yeah the movie gives you a little bit of the plans and structure of a heist...but is its cinematography that really knows how to give you a punch in the gut...the bleak a isolated locations merge very well with the suspense of the fim...

A great movie…..WITH AN AMBIGUOUS ENDING. One does not know if Grant truly is a murderer or just a player with many circumstances in married life. Was the ending just not a good day to murder wife….or will he wait for a LESS suspicious situation….or is he NOT a murderer at all? Thats what one is left with.

Man, I first saw him in the truly terrible film, In Old Chicago, and my only thought was 'who is that beautiful man?' Have since seen Nightmare Alley and he is terrific in it. It's a shame he wasn't able to get as many challenging roles as he was clearly capable of move.

My favorite is “He Walked by Night”, based on a real person and played by Richard Basehart. Talk about 1940s gritty noir Los Angeles. Dragnet later took a clue from this movie. The other favorite is D.O.A., surprised it wasn’t mentioned.

The power and identity you refer to are an illusion , like all illusions the masses are easily controlled through this dream like state . Identity and power are means to seperate people from one another , when we have separate agendas we will first act like and eventually become like animals . Look out your window .

I love how you talk about film, as your passion for cinema shines through. When I watch a film as beautifully made as this one I sometimes feel that it is more REAL than the rest of my life, as if I am existing somehow in the very fabric of the film. Because of this, I enjoy the reviews of people such as yourself who I can imagine may feel something similar when watching great cinema. Happy viewing.

Gene Tierney is OUTSTANDING as Ellen. She was GORGEOUS AND TERRIFYING in this role. Her eyes and facial expressions freak me out when they become stoic and cold when she looks at someone to target. Ellen is definitely a femme fatale. But not the typical type. Sure, she purposefully hurts other people for her own benefit, but that ultimately becomes self-inflicted when she realizes that she can’t truly control those around her and she ultimately wasn’t able to have Richard to herself for very long. She lies to him about her true psychotic nature by masquerading as this loving and devoted woman, she causes others harm just to maintain control over her husband, she has a jealous heart that clouds her senses, and she is extremely selfish. The morals of this story: Never ever ignore the red flags, don’t get blinded by physical beauty and vanity, be extremely careful who you get into a relationship with and/or marry, take the time to actually get to know someone, and trying to control everything and everyone will only make you miserable.

When this was being filmed, I worked in a bar in Silverlake and would go home heading west on Santa Monica Boulevard at about 3:30 in the morning. When I drove past the Formosa Cafe, it was surrounded by an awesome collection of old cars from the late 40's and early 50's. It was obvious that some movie was being made, but I had no way to know what movie. It was fascinating, because I love old cars from that era. A bunch of big, bulbous fastbacks. This went on for several nights, so I could sense that whatever it was, it was a big production. They were filming inside the Formosa, so all I really saw was the cars, but that was good enough. Eventually, I saw L.A. Confidential, and then I immediately knew what production I had been driving past all those months before.

“The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit” went into the topic of a soldier fathering a child with a woman overseas while having been hastily married just before leaving. It’s remarkably respectful of the threat of death in war and how people may respond to someone showing them love and affection under the threat of very possible death at any time. The soldier, Gregory Peck, is home and has a wife and life, and then learns of the child he fathered during the war in Italy, and is faced with the dilemma of being a married, decent man who loves his wife, but also in that moment and circumstance overseas, loved that woman. The story is done so well- perhaps that’s why the film is around 3 hours long, lol. But it’s one of my favorites exactly because of how it treats the subject in such an adult and nuanced way… sometimes in those circumstances, fights and blame and divorce weren’t warranted. The viewer can almost feel the pain of the wife at home who must accept that her husband, during a moment in time, was with another woman, but not because he didn’t love her. She has to be able to love him enough to understand and accept while moving forward without seeing that one moment, years ago, every time she looks in her husband’s face… so well done for its time, so much room and deference given to the pure humanity of such a situation. After I saw it the first time, it stayed with me for days and became among my favorites.
